This very nice young girl presented to Dr. Signore's dermatology office because her mother noticed DISCOLORATION of her skin. The photo above shows brownish velvety skin over her LOWER BACK. She also had similar dark patches over her forehead, underarms, chest, and arms. Dr. Signore quickly diagnosed ACANTHOSIS NIGRICANS, a skin condition which can indicate which children are at higher risk for developing TYPE II DIABETES. He prescribed a glycolic acid lotion. Importantly, he spent the next half hour counseling the patient and her family on the importance of AVOIDING PROCESSED SUGAR, WHITE FLOUR, & WHITE RICE, and other high glycemic foods to hopefully REDUCE this patient's RISK of developing DIABETES. |

ACANTHOSIS NIGRICANS is a skin disorder which is seen in otherwise healthy young people. Also known as benign acanthosis nigricans, or pseudoacanthosis nigricans, it appears begins as brownish velvety discolorations on the back of the neck and in the body folds. Acanthosis nigricans is more common in people of Hispanic, African-American, or Native American origin. Children who have acanthosis nigricans are commonly overweight and often have a family history of diabetes.
In fact, a study by Rafalson, et al published in 2013 in the journal, Obesity, found that U.S. eighth grade students with ACANTHOSIS NIGRICANS had about a 50% increased likelihood of DYSGLYCEMIA (DIABETES OR PRE-DIABETES)! Thus, the skin disorder known as acanthosis nigricans is an important clinical marker of persons at higher risk of diabetes.
So, when Dr. Signore sees a child or young adult with acanthosis nigricans, he discusses the importance of avoiding processed sugars and high fructose corn syrup. He also discusses avoidance of processed white flour- and white rice- containing foods. It is thought that by eating low glycemic foods (vegetables, whole grains, lean poultry & meats) and getting regular physical exercise, children with acanthosis nigricans might AVOID getting type 2 diabetes later in life. So, early diagnosis of acanthosis nigricans can be very important to your child's health!
In addition to dietary modification, Dr. Signore commonly treats his acanthosis nigricans patients with 14% glycolic acid lotion, or other topical creams to help improve the appearance of their skin condition. Additionally, he uses classical homeopathic medicine to help treat acanthosis nigricans. The response to treatment of acanthosis nigricans varies from patient to patient, but often it improves noticeably as in the actual case seen below:

This young girl's skin discolorations were diagnosed by Dr. Signore as ACANTHOSIS NIGRICANS. Dr. Signore prescribed 14% GLYCOLIC ACID LOTION and a LOW-GLYCEMIC DIET (avoidance of processed sugars, high-fructose corn syrup, and refined white flour containing foods. After 4 weeks of treatment, her ACANTHOSIS NIGRICANS became 40% less dark and less raised. However, the patient & her family desired further improvement. So, they scheduled a 2 hour HOMEOPATHIC APPOINTMENT where Dr. Signore asked many detailed questions to determine the patient's CONSTITUTIONAL HOMEOPATHIC REMEDY. Based on the patient's INDIVIDUAL details, Dr. Signore prescribed a homeopathic mineral remedy derived from pure sea water. The next photo on the RIGHT shows her improvement with homeopathic treatment. |

This is the same girl with ACANTHOSIS NIGRICANS after 12 WEEKS of homeopathic treatment. Her ACANTHOSIS NIGRICANS on her back, forehead, neck, arms, and chest has become lighter and smoother. Additionally, since she has begun taking her homeopathic remedy by mouth, her FACIAL ACNE has improved and her SADNESS has also improved. Her FATIGUE has improved and she now has MORE ENERGY which has enabled her to participate more in school gym activities! This child has a history of always getting ACUTE BRONCHITIS every winter. Interestingly, since beginning her CONSTITUTIONAL HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE, she did NOT get ACUTE BRONCHITIS this year! She is continuing to AVOID PROCESSED SUGARS, CORN SYRUP, & WHITE FLOUR. |
